WHS WL Year 1 Curriculum Guide

This course is designed to enhance students’ ability to learn a world language. Students will be expected to acquire a solid understanding of the structure of the language through the development of the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational). Emphasis will be placed on communicative tasks, language structure, practical use of vocabulary, and a true understanding and appreciation of the culture of countries where the language is spoken. Cultural understanding will be achieved through authentic videos, music, classroom presentations, and selected readings. A variety of assessments will be used throughout the year.

UNIT 2: School Life	What is the meaning of school? How is my school unique? What are schools like in different countries? What is a good teacher like? What are schedules like in different countries? How are your school activities like in different countries?	Students will demonstrate understanding and self expression in the target language about the following subtopics: School supplies School subjects Schedule Time Numbers 0-60 There is /there are I have/ I do not have colors school Transportation Action verbs to describe what you do at school and after school sports , after school activities
UNIT 3: Family & Home	What is the meaning of family? How is my family unique? What do I do with my family? What do families look like in different countries?	Students will demonstrate understanding and self expression in the target language about the following subtopics: Family members Describe family members ( physical description and personality) Provide information and simple details: what family members like and dislike Different types of family Activities with family There is / there are To be/ to have Action verbs that describe what people do at home
Unit 4: Food	How is food connected to culture and celebrations? What do food/meal customs look like in different countries?	Students will demonstrate understanding and self expression in the target language about the following subtopics: talk about likes/dislikes compare foods talk about different food categories order something from a restaurant/cafe menu in the target language talk about different food shop types (fish market, dairy shop, butcher, etc) talk about different food-related habits from countries that speak the target language
UNIT 5: Healthy Living	How does my lifestyle impact my health? How do you take care of your mind and body?	Students will demonstrate understanding and self expression in the target language about the following subtopics: Talk about Daily routine Talk about Parts of the body Talk about What hurts? Give Advice Talk about Activities to stay healthy Talk about What you do everyday to take care of yourself Benefits Commands Talk about what you do to relax.
UNIT 6: Fashion & Travel	What is the meaning of fashion? How do fashion trends reflect/represent different cultures? How can fashion be used to express one’s identity?	Students will demonstrate understanding and self expression in the target language about the following subtopics: describe fashion trends describe what they and others wear talk about appropriate clothing choices depending on the season/event Famous designers Cultural attire
